The case is based on NotCo, a successful Chilean food-tech company that uses machine learning algorithms to innovate plant-based food products as part of their mission to build a more sustainable world. NotCo Food, an existing business under the NotCo umbrella, is dedicated to introducing plant-based food products that deliver the same customer experience as animal-based food. NotCo Food sells products under its own brand through physical and web-based retail channels. Their distribution relies on an extensive set of partnerships with companies such as Kraft Heinz, Starbucks, Dunkin'', Mars, and Shake Shack. NotCo leadership is considering growing its business by launching NotCo Tech alongside the existing NotCo Food business. NotCo Tech would be introduced as a digital multisided platform (MSP) in the B2B space. The consideration of a multisided platform posits critical opportunities and challenges for NotCo. Furthermore, the new MSP would be expected to exist along with NotCo Food, a one-sided business model. Unlike a one-sided business, MSPs are a business model in which an intermediary (the multisided platform) facilitates transactions and governs interactions between distinct user groups. NotCo must choose the sides (user groups) that would interact in the platform and the value propositions for each of them. The use cases are needed to define the value proposition and the value provided by the platform to each side/user. Another challenge to be addressed in an MSP is to identify which users should be prioritized to increase participation of other user groups/sides (i.e., a chicken-and-egg problem).
